So I have a slight obsession with the music of Queen, and I play a little guitar...
My Aunt Judy (in actuality my wife's aunt but we're all family) likes to send us nice presents, and she has realized that items relating to Queen, specifically the unique guitar (Google Red Special for more info.) of Brian May, PhD, make me much more excited than adding to my collection of aloha shirts. For instance, she had this incredible cake baked for me for my birthday last year.
The guitar was painstakingly made from chocolate, with capellini pasta strings, and the cake itself was chocolate with chocolate filling and icing. Beautiful and delicious. When it was presented to me, I was speechless. My name was spelled wrong, but who really cares at this point?
This past December, she sent me a mini Brian May guitar. The Mini May is an official product of the Brian May Guitar company and is a real guitar at 3/4 scale, with a single Tri-Sonic-style pickup. Here it is on the wall along with some other Brian May-related items in my collection.
For my birthday this year, she sent me something that requires a little more effort - a full-size Brian May Red Special made by Burns Guitars, except this one needs a little work. It has a broken headstock and has been stripped of virtually all its parts. Her friend David found it at auction and thought I would enjoy a project...
As can be seen in the photos, it's a nasty break. And it's been repaired before-badly. Someone glued it, drilled in a few tiny brass screws, covered those over, then tried to hide the damage by painting a black strip all around the base of the headstock and covering the whole headstock with a cheap lacquer. This will be a lot of damage to undo and repair before I can even start mounting the parts I will need to go find.
Coming next: the professional opinions.
